Medical coding? Like, programming?

Not quite. Learn more.

What are you even talking about?

Medical coding is a career. It is a non-clinical role that uses medical documentation to classify things such as doctors visits, medical procedures, diagnoses, medications, etc. This information is used, among other things, for insurance and research purposes. Medical coders assign codes (duh) that reflect what services were rendered, which in turn affects how said services get billed. It is a highly detail-oriented field that requires a thorough understanding of basic medical gobbledegook.

Medical coding is not for the faint of heart. Online influencers and universities may try to convince you that you need their courses to become a medical coder. While they can be helpful, don't be fooled. A disciplined individual can become a medical coder through self-study.

In reality you need to sit for a test, pass, and then maintain your certification (usually a CPC or CCS for exmaple) by taking continuing education credits.

You do not need to be a doctor or even a nurse to become a certified medical coder. Unless you're a god or a freak, you probably are going to have to study. A shitton.

Pre-requisites

Medical terminology. Anatomy and physiology. Pharmocology.

Intimidating? Yes. Impossible? Fuck no.

Getting it right

Mise en place. Every coder needs certain books to perform their job. These books are standardized, lest the entirety of the industry go up in flames.

These tomes of reference text are often contained by spiral-binding to account for the endless flipping back and forth. You need to know where the information you need is, and how to get there quickly. Speed will come with time. And perhaps some cocaine, which is a different kind of speed, but that isn't advisable.

Placeholder text until we get this together.

The road ahead

If you're here, you're my hostage. Or you're me in the future. If you're not wondering how in the world you managed to screw up the CSS this time, then... hi. This isn't really meant for you, but I hope you enjoy shuffling through my haphazard notes. Who knows. Maybe you'll learn something. Or unlearn something. Whatever. I don't actually care.
